Inscribed: "The Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent one from another" on front "Genesis 31:49" on back commonly called Mizpah in Hebrew literally means 'watchtower'.  It refers to the Biblical story of Jacob and Laban. Mizpah jewelry was particularly popular in Victorian times often taking the form of a heart cut in two pieces, each half to be worn by friends or lovers who are temporally parted. It adopted a more general meaning over time - "may God watch over you".
