They are representative of a fashionable style of earring found throughout the provinces of the Roman Empire from Britain to the Mediterranean and as far east as Roman Egypt where they can be seen in many portraits of the period. The harmoniously designed crescent-shaped earrings are enhanced by cultured pearls. They were, and are, also created with semi-precious and precious stones.
